Measurements taken with the Extech 380193 LCR meter include capacitance, ESR (equivalent series resistance), Q Factor, and the inverse of Q-Factor, the Dissipation-Factor. All of these tests are performed at both 120 Hz and 1 kHz. Using 2 test frequencies helps validate the first measurements on the first frequency.

As of August 2018 I have began to take insulation resistance measurements using my UNI-T UT511 meter. This allows me to to calculate the dielectric impedance to DC voltage at or near the actual working voltage of the capacitor. In the same way a person might tell a loved one to get a 2nd opinion from another doctor, using a 2nd meter helps us to validate the first measurements!

I have been impressed by how many vintage capacitors are still testing better than their modern equivalents. Of course this does not include electrolytic caps, 98% of them are bad after half a century of aging. The only vintage electrolytic caps I know of that still tested well are some from my Sprague “Atoms” collection (will be for sale in the next series of ads).

 

 

NOS Paktron ITW (Mylar) .33uF 100V (Lot #1):

The Paktron ITW mylar film capacitors tested very strong with minimal drift during measurement readings. Normal drift such as seen with a WIMA MKT capacitor is below 5%, the Paktron mylars drift is below 2%. Also, the capacitance accuracy are all within 5%!

NOS Paktron EVL 65-21151 Blue Drops .22uF 150V (Lot #2):

The Paktron EVL 65-21151 mylar blue drop style tested very strong with minimal drift during measurement readings. Normal drift such as seen with a WIMA MKT capacitor is below 5%, the Paktron mylars drift is below 3%. Also, the capacitance accuracy are all within 10% and one is within 5% at 120Hz and 1kHz! One of them has a lower ESR and and higher Q rating, the other higher capacitance accuracy. Both with very low amounts of drift, sometimes not a single digit in 100+ counts, very stable.

NOS Paktron Blue Drop C71736-010 .56uF 200V (Lot #3):

The Paktron C71736-010  mylar blue drop style tested strong in ESR and Quality Factor, with low drift during measurement readings. Normal drift such as seen with a WIMA MKT capacitor is below 5%, the Paktron mylars drift is below 3%. Also, the capacitance accuracy are all within 10%  at 120Hz and 1kHz!

NOS Paktron 0.033uF 200V FMT69 Blue Drops (Lot #4):

The Paktron 57-10748 mylar light blue drop style tested well for NOS capacitors. Not as great as some of the other groups, but still good numbers besides the one that is slightly outside the 10% territory, I’ll take a lesser offer on that one than the listed price. These capacitors still had low drift during measurement readings. Overall they tested well and are pretty rare style of Paktron caps to run across these days in NOS condition. 2 of these tested VERY good all around, sub 1% tolerance accuracy on capacitance and great Q-ratings!

NOS Paktron 57-10748 223 K 521 Mylar Blue Drops 0.02 uF 400V (Lot #5):

These Paktron 57-19695 Mylar Light Blue Drops RA LL 0.027 uF 400V tested EXCELLENT for NOS capacitors!!! Some of the best numbers I have seen for NOS capacitors, these are gems! All of them tested within 5% and multiple sub 1% capacitors (for capacitance)!! Then the Q-Rating and ESR look great, these numbers were so solid that they barely ever moved and when I came back to add deviation numbers, the capacitance were literally exactly the same before as on the meter now, these were the first to do that. NOS Paktron 19695 Mylar Blue Drops .027 uF 400V (Lot #6):

The Paktron 57-19695 Mylar Light Blue Drops RA LL 0.027 uF 400V tested EXCELLENT for NOS capacitors!!! Some of the best numbers I have seen for NOS capacitors, these are gems! All of them tested within 5% and multiple sub 2% capacitors (for capacitance)!! Then the Q-Rating and ESR look great, these numbers were so solid that they barely even moved and when I came back to add deviation numbers, the capacitance were literally exactly the same before as on the meter now, these were the second to do that (both from the same family of Paktron Blue Drops). Tested on 7/30/18.

NOS EVOX Mini Box MMK Mylar Film 0.15uF 250V (Lot #7):

The EVOX Mini Box MMK Mylar Film capacitors tested very good across the board for NOS (or new) capacitors!!! Some of the higher numbers of the first group of lots, with excellent accuracy for capacitance (all within 10% at 120Hz and 1kHz)! The Q-Rating and ESR look great for this type of capacitor it’s typical, WIMA and ERO Panaserts have similiar test numbers. Tested on 7/30/18.

These were the first capacitor group to have Q-Factors beyond 1000, this causes the Extech 380193 to read OL (Overload). So in order to maintain the scale, which changes with the range you have it in by a specific factor each time. So you want to leave the meter in the same setting for all of the capacitors in the group, to do this I used the dissipation factor and took the inverse of it to find the Q-Factor’s value. This is a valid way to get a good estimate, but the resolution of the possible values isn’t great when you only have 0.009 to 0.004 to give you values.

NOS ERO Panasert Mylar Film .33uF 63V (Lot #8):

The ERO Panasert mylar film capacitors tested great across the board for NOS capacitors!!! Sub 5% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group and a few sub 1%!!The Q-Rating and ESR look great for this type of capacitor it’s typical, WIMA and EVOX Mini Box have similiar test numbers. Tested on 7/30/18. These capacitors had minimal drift, barely moving at all during the first few hundred counts (Q-Rating and ESR are on 10k display with capacitance on the 20k).

NOS GE Mylar Molded Black Plastic 0.68uF 100V (Lot #9):

The three GE mylar molded plastic capacitors tested excellent across all measurements! Sub 6% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group. The Q-Ratings are good and ESR measurements look great, competitive with WIMA and EVOX Mini Box. Tested on 7/30/18. These capacitors had low drift, roughly 5% or less drift during testing.

These GE molded plastic capacitors appear sealed tight with no cracks in the plastic and should stand up to almost any environmental abuses within reason.

NOS Sprague 433P METFILM E 0.22uF 100V (from Sprague Lab Engineering Kit) Lot #10A:

The Sprague 433P epoxy coated METFilm ‘E’ capacitors tested impressively well across all measurements! Sub 6% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group. The Q-Ratings are good and ESR measurements look excellent, some of the most consistent capacitors types tested in the first collection of capacitor lots. Tested on 7/30/18. These capacitors had extremely low drift, roughly 3% or less drift during testing.

The capacitors are from an Engineering 433P Lab Kit collection (sourced from a former Sprague Executive estate sale). NOS Sprague 630 446 6914 Molded Plastic Mylar .0068uF 400V Vintage (Lot #11):

These Sprague 630 446 6914 tested very strong in capacitance accuracy, one dead on (100% accuracy!) with minimal drift during measurement readings. The Sprague plastic molded mylar AX PC caps drift is higher with ESR than capacitance. Also, the capacitance accuracy are all within 10% and all but one is within 5% at 120Hz and 1kHz!

The Q rating at 120Hz could only be calculated in the uF range due to the dissipation factor (DF) being below 0.000, below the minimum reading of the meter. I moved towards attempting to get the DF because the Quality Factor is over 1000 and only reads as OL. This left me with one option to get any reading at all, change the scale of the meter to uF and that is why you see this mentioned in the graph. For this reason you can’t draw some conclusions on the 120Hz vs 1kHz Q-Factors that you usually can. This group is also an example of where the SRF (Self Resonant Frequency) is before 1kHz and the ESR actually goes up with frequency past the SRF instead of down. This is common in real world capacitors and it won’t be the last time you see this in a HL vintage lot table of measurements.

NOS Mullard Tropical Fish 0.01uF 200V Vintage Capacitors | 8 per lot (Lot #12):

These Mullard 0.01uF Tropical Fish tested strong in capacitance accuracy with minimal drift during the measurement readings. The 0.01uF Tropical Fish had little drift during ESR and Q-Factor readings (besides the QF being over 1000 @ 120Hz). Also, the capacitance accuracy are all within 10% and all but one or two are within 5% at 120Hz and 1kHz!

NOS Mullard Tropical Fish 0.15uF 250V Vintage Capacitors | 8 per lot (Lot #33):

These Mullard 0.15uF Tropical Fish caps had very little drift during ESR and Q-Factor readings. Capacitance accuracy are all within 10% and many under 5% again with minimal drift. Any tested caps that didn’t fall inside the capacitance tolerance were removed from this group before posting the ad.

2x NOS Sprague Orange Drops 220P 0.2 uF 200V Vintage Caps | 2 per lot (Lot #34)

These Sprague 220P epoxy coated Orange Drop capacitors tested great across all measurements! Sub 10% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group. The Q-Ratings are good and ESR measurements look above average, Q rating is stable at both test frequencies. Tested on 7/30/18. These capacitors had low drift, roughly 5% or less drift during testing. Capacitance accuracy is superb with their measurements only changing 1 to 2 digits from testing on 7/30/18 vs. testing on 8/16/18!

2x NOS Sprague Orange Drops 220P 0.22uF 200V | 2 per lot (Lot #36)

These Sprague 220P epoxy coated Orange Drop capacitors tested great across all measurements! Sub 5% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group. The Q-Ratings are good and ESR measurements look above average, Q rating is stable at both test frequencies. Tested on 7/30/18. These capacitors had low drift, roughly 5% or less drift during testing.

New 8/16/18: Insulation Resistance taken for each capacitor, all are within the expected IR value from manufacturer tables, such as from Kemet and Sprague IR vs. Capacitance tables. Measured with minimal drift after initial charging approaches steady state. This low leakage can be calculated using I=V/R -> (250V/(130×10^6) = 1.923×10^-6 amp). Uni-T UT511 Pro Insulation Tester was used to acquire these values. Insulation Resistance is a measurement of the dielectric impedance to DC voltage, this is why some older insulation tester are called Dielectric Testers. Overall these Orange Drops tested very well with sub 10% drift and consistent measurements across the group.

The capacitors are from a standard Sprague “Kleer-Pak™” that would have been seen on the shelf in parts stores. If you purchase both sets of capacitors I’ll include (all) the Kwikette connectors. Re-certified Used AJAX .056uF 200V Blue Molded | (Lot #37)

These Ajax blue molded tested impressively well across all of the measurements! Sub 9% tolerance accuracy for all capacitors in this group, most under 5%. The Q-Rating and ESR measurements both look both strong and consistent! These capacitors had very low drift, roughly 5% or less drift during testing.  These are some of the best testing used capacitors that I have seen thus far, this is why I picked these for use in this ad! These test more consistently across the group than my Sprague Black Beauties and Sprague Bumblebees in ESR, QF, and IR! Capacitance barely changes between 120Hz and 1kHz (on one of the caps it doesn’t change at all!), this shows strong performance for a variety of circuit operational frequencies (ESR shows similar 120Hz vs. 1kHz strength).

Insulation Resistance is taken for each capacitor, all are within the expected IR value from manufacturer tables, such as from Kemet and Sprague IR vs. Capacitance tables. Minimal drift after initial charging approaches steady state and thus low leakage (250V/(225×10^6) = 1.111×10^-6 amp) The Uni-T UT511 Pro Insulation Tester was used to acquire these values, with accuracy rated at 3% for this meter. Insulation Resistance is a measurement of the dielectric impedance to DC voltage, this is why some older insulation tester are called Dielectric Testers. Drift was monitored throughout  testing and was only 10% of measured IR values, after 30 seconds this was below 5%
